No Entry is about people fighting for their democratic rights. As Robert Richter QC says: "The preservation of our rights and liberties is in no way entrenched and needs to be constantly defended."
The images in this book capture significant moments in the Save Albert Park campaign. In the words of John Pilger: "People are no longer prepared to accept cynical and amoral action, or culpable inaction, that touches their lives and the lives of others, regardless of the power of the perpetrator."
A secret deal struck between Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett, businessman Ron Walker and entrepreneur Bernie Ecclestone led to an agreement to build a Formula One Grand Prix race-track in Albert Park without public consultation. The following year saw more than one thousand trees felled, more than 150 homes damaged by soil compaction and 383 arrests as the people struggled against an imposed government decision. In the foreword, lain Stewart says, "The campaign will continue until the race is re-located and the park is returned to the people."
This book documents a remarkable struggle in Victoria's social and political history.
